Oil-free compressors play an essential role in compressed air systems where the potential malfunction of the mechanical oil removal system is a considerable downside risk.

In more technical terms, this function is known as a Class 0 supply, based on the ISO 8573-1 international standard. This refers to the lubrication-free nature of the compression process within the machine.

This method of compression can be applied across multiple types, including screw, vane, piston, and scroll compressors. Recently, piston types have tended to operate on a smaller scale, catering to highly specific uses such as laboratories, dental applications, and functions requiring 0.5cfm to 6cfm flow rates.

Rotary scroll machines comfortably cover the mid-range needs, being ideal for larger-scale labs or smaller workshops, handling flow rates in the 6cfm to 40cfm range. When dealing with higher demand cases, from 40cfm to several thousands of cfm, oil-free rotary screw compressors serve as the go-to choice.

For exceptionally high flow rates, beyond the capacity of screw compressors, a Turbo compressor is employed. Acting much like a high-speed fan, it's not a common fixture but remains an incredibly effective solution for large-scale applications.
