Tell us where noise matters
Tell us which tools or machinery will run together, and the airflow and pressure if known. Explain whether the proposed position is indoors or outdoors, what power is available, the site location and operating hours. Mention neighbouring workspaces, visitors or other noise-sensitive activities, plus any written noise criteria supplied for the project. Indoor suitability needs a separate assessment of the equipment and installation.
Compare the conditions, not just the number
“Silent” and “quiet” are marketing descriptions whose definitions vary between manufacturers. Ask for the proposed machine’s noise declaration and the conditions behind it. Sound power and sound pressure are different measurements and are not interchangeable; a sound pressure figure also needs its measurement distance and test conditions.
- Which measurement is quoted?
- Is it sound power or sound pressure, and where was it measured? Compare like-for-like declarations rather than choosing the smallest number.
- How was the compressor operating?
- Ask about load, operating pressure and the test setup. Do those conditions reflect how you expect to use it?
- What does the figure cover?
- Is it the machine alone or the complete installation? Discuss other equipment, positioning and the surroundings. Distance, nearby surfaces and the environment affect the sound experienced at the job.
A declared noise figure is a starting point for comparison, not a fixed outcome at your site. Share the relevant criteria so the proposed arrangement can be discussed against them.
Before you enquire
Is a silent compressor literally noiseless?
No. The term usually describes a quieter design, not the absence of sound. Ask what the manufacturer declares and how it relates to your working conditions.
What else needs agreeing besides noise?
The airflow at working pressure, available power, hose length and connections, and any drying or filtration requirements. Give your dates, operating hours and access details so equipment suitability, delivery and collection can be agreed for the job.
Can I enquire without technical specifications?
Yes. Start with the job and what needs to run. The compressor sizing guide helps identify useful details; unknown specifications need not stop your enquiry.
