Confirm flow at the working pressure

A 400 CFM brief needs a pressure and a delivery basis. At the same reference conditions, 400 CFM equals 11.3267386368 m³/min, or about 679.604 m³/h. Compare that requirement with documented free air delivery at the working pressure, rather than a displacement figure or motor rating.

As a hypothetical example, a production line may need temporary air while its normal supply is isolated. Identify which machines must keep running, which stop during the changeover and what happens at restart. The restart peak and the steady requirement may differ; neither should be guessed from the 400 CFM label.

Describe duty and available power

Separate continuous shift demand from short events such as multiple actuators cycling together. Record the operating hours and any idle periods, and identify whether the temporary equipment serves the full system or selected branches. Ask for suitability against that duty pattern.

Have the electrical contact confirm the supply available at the proposed position and review the proposed compressor’s connection and starting requirements. Where electric operation cannot be supported, describe a potential outdoor position and site restrictions for discussion. There is no universal conversion from 400 CFM to motor kW.

Plan treatment, access and timing

Document the minimum pressure and air quality at the process connection. Include the existing treatment arrangement, hoses, pipe bore and the route from the temporary position. Ask which components are included and who will coordinate isolation, connection and handover.

Provide a delivery entrance and receiving contact as well as the process location. Set out the earliest connection window, the air-ready deadline, requested start date and expected hire duration. A size enquiry is not a reservation or a statement of available stock.

Hire questions

Is 400 CFM a particular compressor model?

No. It is a flow figure. The required pressure, flow reference conditions, duty and installation determine what proposal should be assessed.

Can I enquire if the figure is provisional?

Yes. Say that 400 CFM is provisional and explain where it came from. Include the tools or process and their documented demand where available.

What should the quotation confirm?

Ask for the proposed delivery at pressure, air treatment, connection requirements, transport arrangements, hire period and the items included in the total.
